Hybrid Research Assignment

In my Concepts and Theory class, I am tasked with writing and presenting a research assignment on the work of two artists. The artists must be working in the realm of hybrid practice.

I have chosen to go with two artists that are creating work that is different aesthetically but similar in concept.

The concept I've chosen to go with, works off my current interest in photography and truth (you can see my work here)

The first artist I am researching is Spanish born artist, Joan Fontcuberta. I will be focusing on his work Fauna in which he created a whole fiction. The series is presented as a long lost research assignment done by a missing zoologist. The work contains photographs, field notes, specimens, even a stuffed animal. It all seems completely legitimate, except for the fact that these "animals" are unbelievable.

In contrast to this work, I have chosen the work of Cynthia Greig. Keep in mind, the aesthetic may be different, but the concept is the same. Truth in photography. The work I will be focusing on is Representations. For this work, Greig takes everyday objects, often ones that have been made obsolete due to technological advancements and, first, she whitewashes them with white paint. She then sketches on this objects and photographs them. The end result is seemingly a simple line drawing, but in actuality, it is a photograph.
